Boat sizes for ocean fishing I would agree that a 17 deep-V is the absolute minimum size boat to go even a few miles offshore. I say that because thats the kind I have. Even at that it has to be a perfect weather day and I keep my radio on the weather channel a lot to be sure somethings not jumping up.
Whatever size you get. You will have one day where youll wish it was one foot larger and another day one foot shorter. Consider if youll ever need to worry about fishing or traveling in shallow water.

For coastal offshore fishing within about 10 miles of your home port you need a craft of between 47 and 58 metres in length. A 47-metre boat is around the minimum size you should think about for offshore work Id rate 47 metres as the bare minimum really regardless of the hull type construction material or seaworthiness of the hull.
Someone that knows the area can take a 14 ft alum boat safely some where offshore that another in a 20 ft boat should not go for thier safety. Where a 14-16 boat can go today to fish tomorrow you might need a 24-30 ft the next day to get to the same place an fish. If you are new to boating a 40-foot boat may not be the best option even though you may want one.

Luckly people have made it with a good 25 foot ocean going sail boat but very hard to predict the weather far enough in advance to be sure of a safe trip. Power boats just can not carry enough fuel.
UP and down the coast some days a 16 foot open bow is all you need. For most of us 6- to 8-foot waves are about all one can handle while bottom fishing and mooching while substantially smaller seas are needed for salmon trolling. Its like one captain told us as we plowed through 8- to 10-foot waves.
